Save an adolescent girl from child marriage on World Population Day!

The theme this year for World Population Day is based on safeguarding the health and rights of women and girls around the world especially during the time of COVID-19 pandemic. A recent UNFPA research highlighted that if the lockdown continues for 6 months, and there is major disruption to health services, then 47 million women in low and middle-income countries might not have access to modern contraceptives. This would in turn lead to 7 million unintended pregnancies. Apart from that, it could see a rise in gender-based violence, female genital mutilation and child marriages.‘Football for Freedom’ is an initiative ofHAQ: Centre for Child Rights, a GuideStar India verified NGO, for preventing child marriage. Currently operational in Ajmer District, this programme aims at enabling adolescent girls who have demonstrated courage in stopping their early marriages and have decided to break free from the patriarchal set up of society and are willing to change the conventional gender roles in their villages. These girls are warriors in their own little ways who have found their way through sports and are aspiring to exercise their right to choice and freedom. Currently, there are 50 girls under this programme who are undergoing routine training under the guidance of an experienced football coach. These girls have come a long way from playing in playgrounds to now participating in district level local football tournaments. Support these young girls in their journey to safeguarding their freedom to determine their own future and to make a better world for all. Giving for #MyBetterBharat
