I feel proud to be associated with a NGO struggling hard to preserve our traditional Bhajan (which is disappearing since the Bollywood remix music is catching heartstrings of youngsters) & to encourage experts in this field by organization of Bhajan Competition since my childhood i.e. last 23 years. A bhajan literally means "sharing" & has no prescribed form, or set rules, is in free form, normally lyrical and based on melodic ragas. Bhajan texts are often didactic and autobiographical. The former suggest idealized behaviors for bhaktas (devotees) to imitate, while the latter cite examples from the lives of famous bhaktas such as Mirabai. Sometimes, deities such as Krishna or Rāma are the subject of bhajan texts, with stories from their lives as examples for devotees. It belongs to a genre of music & arts that developed with Bhakti movement. Ideas from scriptures, legendary epics, the teachings of saints & loving devotion to a deity are the typical subjects of bhajans. The saints of the Bhakti movement are credited with pioneering many forms of bhajans, but bhajans have been widely composed anonymously & shared as a musical & arts tradition.. Some Bhajan songs are centuries old, popular on a pan-regional basis, passed down as a community tradition, while others are newly composed. Everyone in Hindu tradition is free to compose a Bhajan with whatever ideas or in praise of any deity of their wish, but since they are sung, they typically follow meters of classical Indian music, the raga and the tala to go with the musical instruments. Bhajans have been influenced at various times by the teachings of saints such as Chaitanya, Haridas, Tulsidas, Soordas, Mira, and Kabir, whose songs are still sung today. They form a part of contemporary Hinduism. I will request you to give helping had to this NGO who has clear vision for welfare of our society as a whole.

At 15 I read the story of a French national living in Kolkata who had adopted 5 street kids. From being beggars on the street corners, these kids were studying in the best school in the city and were excelling at sports – which is why the article had been published. This story struck me for the choice the man had made to change the lives of children who weren’t his own. Giving them security and a regular home had made all the difference. Here was a man who had the power and the means and he used them to make a difference. Many don’t – I realized it even then. I admired in him the ability to be able to go beyond himself and found it extremely inspiring.

For many years I have been supporting an orphanage and contributed regularly to CRY. While in both cases, one received news of how the institutions were making an impact, my own association was from a distance; writing out annual contributions but nothing more than that. About a decade ago, I volunteered to spend some time with SNEHA and the association transitioned from being a volunteer to an advisor to a member on the board of trustees. My giving to SNEHA has really been of an advisory nature around organizational and people aspects, answering questions that the leaders may have, coaching some of the people, asking questions at trustee meetings to better understand what they do and probably making suggestions which may make no sense but receive a nod of heads because the people are too nice to counter a trustee. What I have received in return though is immense. I have personally witnessed the passion in people at SNEHA to make a difference despite facing a number of hardships like working in the urban slums of Mumbai come rain or sun shine, dealing with different kind of communities with their own dynamics, dealing with government health systems while being focused on making an impact on health of women and children in these communities measured by metrics. I have seen and witnessed empathy in action, coupled with strong impact orientation. I have also seen how this organization has grown thanks to the wonderful people who lead it and work in it, ably guided by the founding ‘mothers’ who have made SNEHA the institution it is today. My simple point to all who are reading this is, when you give by being involved with the work and the people who are working for social causes, you get a lot in return and the giving is a lot more meaningful for all concerned.
