My name is Vanessa. I grew up in the bustling city of Mumbai. It’s also a city of extremes – extreme wealth alongside extreme poverty. I grew up in a middle class home with middle class values. I recall every Christmas, two blind children from an orphanage would be brought home to spend X’mas with our family. We grew up helping family and friends along the way. After I graduated, like most youngsters, I joined the corporate world, lived a comfortable life, which in many ways cocooned me from much of Mumbai’s reality. It was many years later, when I offered to volunteer at an NGO SNEHA, based in Mumbai, that I got to see the stark realities of the living conditions of about 60% of Mumbai’s population. They live in squalor, struggling for day to day survival. They have no place in their tiny homes, but place in their large hearts. Whenever I visit the slums, I am always welcomed in with a bright and warm smile, offered tea or a cold drink, given the single chair in the house to sit on and made to feel very welcome. There is a deep acceptance of their conditions – their “karma”. A deep desire to improve their lives by working hard. A deep strength to overcome whatever life throws at them. This attitude inspires me. It makes me to want to reach out and help these people and I joined SNEHA. Over the past six years I’ve worked with so many inspiring women in the slums. I wonder whether we are giving them or they are giving us - teaching us what strength, generosity and love really is. Teaching us to live in communities, caring for and sharing with all around. They know the true joy of living. You can donate here:

There is one incident I recall when I started personally going for school sessions, sharing my journey with students. They were very curious to know and understand how I started my career. That day I decided to help adolescents and youth, and guide them to choose suitable careers. Today Bright Future is a big organisation touching thousands of lives in Mumbai. I plan to reach out to 1 lac adolescents and youth in the coming years.

I am the Hon. Secretary of the organization for the past 30 years. And together with my husband Kishor Kher – grandson of the late founder, we founded ‘Yuva Parivartan’ – a skills training programme for semi-literate youth to transform their livelihood prospects. The earliest experience was an eye opener. Adult literacy classes were being held all over the community we serve in Bandra East, Mumbai. Learning the 3R’s encouraged the women and girls to learn vocational skills. When young women became auxiliary nurses and beauticians it was the most satisfying experience. Realising the latent potential in illiterate women and girls, encouraged us to find our calling of Yuva Parivartan.
