These children, along with their families, travel to Mumbai from remote towns and villages, in the hope of being treated at hospitals such as Tata Memorial, LTMGH (Sion Hospital), Wadia Hospital, Nair Hospital etc. where they receive free of charge treatment.
But they have no place to stay, and many end up on the footpath, or paying dearly for unhygienic accommodation. Unhygienic living conditions, lack of psychosocial support, lack of proper nutrition and weakened immune systems will lead to lower survival rate.

AFA is a non-profit organization that pioneered the autism movement in South Asia. In the 1980’s autism was virtually unheard of in India, a diagnosis of autism was rare, and there was little information available. The majority of children with autism received a diagnosis of mental retardation, ‘mental subnormality’ or any number of other labels. Neither parents nor schools understood that these children were in fact autistic, and that children with autism respond best to specific intervention techniques. Schools and parents alike were helpless to provide adequate services to their children with autism.
In 1991, AFA began as a parent support group, with a focus on raising awareness about autism in India through smaller-scale project. In 1994 AFA began providing counselling services, specialised education and training for parents and professionals. March 1994 saw the start of ‘Open Door,’ the first specialised school for children with autism in South Asia. With overwhelming response to these initiatives the decision was taken to formally register Action For Autism in 1994. Recognising the lack of trained professionals to teach children with autism and to cater to the increasing demand for its services, AFA initiated a Teacher Training Programme, which has today become a one year Diploma in Special Education DSE-ASDunder the Rehabilitation Council of India.
Working within the framework of a rights based approach, AFA gradually extended its activities to include parent empowerment and advocacy activities to promote legislative action to guarantee services and rights of persons with autism. AFA strongly advocated for and was instrumental in the inclusion of autism in the National Trust Act in 1999, and continues to lead the autism community in its efforts to include autism in the Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Act. A groundbreaking study of awareness of autism among medical professionals initiated the research activities of AFA in 1997-98. AFA is a founding member of the World Autism Organization, started in 1998, and continues to represent India within the world community. In 2000, AFA initiated the Mother-Child Intervention Programme, a model of intensive parent training for young children with autism. This programme has trained more than 250 parents from throughout the subcontinent, as well as from Kenya and the Maldives. In September 2006, Mrs Sonia Gandhi formally dedicated the NationalCentre for Autism. TheNational Centreacts as a national nodal organization to address needs critical to the development, growthandinclusionof personswithautismspectrumdisorders across the Indian community. With the National Centre, we have been able to greatly expand our role as the National Autism organization in the country, such as actively providing support to fledging autism societies in India and South Asia.
Having pioneered the autism movement in India, AFA has succeeded in firmly placing autism on the disability map of India and looks forward to the continued growth and success of activities in India.
The main objective of the organization is to eliminate child labor and put back the rescued children in formal schools. Cholai is also involved in women empowerment through entrepreneurship and vocational skill development through community college.
Since one and a half years, we are running a project called Saksham, in which we are providing the youth with a sense of direction in a specific vocation so that they can plan on a regular employment and earning capacity beyond a raw labor wage. We identified youth from lower income families who are in 10th, 11th, 12th or pursuing graduation or school drop outs and give them vocational training.
We aim to get the youth exposed to the functionality of an office by making them do on-the-job training. We then aim to bringing them into the main stream by making them available to other offices for hiring.
We have already assisted more than 60 govt school going kids and helped placing 10 needy youths.
