How to participate

The strategy is to establish a vocational training centre for women on tailoring which is community need based vocations and assist them to be self- employed with the community support. A socio-economic survey was conducted in the target villages and women volunteers of Income Generation Unit of the organization helped us in this regard. They also participated in the survey analysis and the action plan was drafted with their views. The priority was given for capacity building and need based vocational skill development. 

20 rural poor women in 6 villages under Pathar Pratima block who are  divorced, widow, trafficked, handicapped, attacked by violence, economically poor,  disregarded and women who belong to  aristocrat family but poor.

               Criteria for selection of the trainees:-         

  • All the trainees will be  the BPL families.
  • Minimum educational qualification will be class-VIII.
  • Age    18-40 years.
  • Preference will be given to divorced, widow, trafficked, attacked by violence, handicapped, disregarded women and poor women but belong to aristocrat family.
  • Preference will be given to them who belong to SC/ST/OBC and minority family. 

 

 

The Event will support
  • The trained women will be linked with the existing Self Help Groups and local bank for Micro credit support.
  • Link for placement in private tailoring units, readymade garments unit, NGO training centre will be arranged by the organization.
  • The NGO  will make liaison with the artisans for marketing of tailoring products by linking with the marketing channels and arranging participation in the other sectors                                                                                                            
  • In 6 months 20 women will be trained on tailoring.
  • The trained women will become self- employed after the training and in such way unemployment will be solved.
  • The annual income of the women will increase within a range from Rs 10000.00 to Rs 12000.00. 
  • The quality of living standard of the women will be developed. 
  • The unemployment problem of the target rural poor 20 women will be solved. The proposed skills would be effective to provide continued opportunity to earn better wages for a long period. It will be recognized as an Income Generation Project in the society. Participation of women in decision making will be ensured and rights of survival will be increased among them.

Tailoring is the art of designing, cutting, fitting, fabricating and finishing garments. As a craft, tailoring dates back to the early middle ages when tailors guilds were established in major European towns. Tailoring has traditionally been and remains a hierarchical and male dominated trade ,though some women tailor have learned the trade. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, tailors were responsible for making a variety of outer garments including capes, coats, cloaks etc. Tailors were the structural Engineers for women’s fashions. Women largely made relatively unshaped undergarments and shirts for men, women and children.

The majority of Indian population has historically been brought up on tailored clothing as the garmenting industry was restricted to small scale manufacturing until the late 1990s.  Also, due to lack of size standardization in apparel, there were few ready-to-wear (RTW) options and ready-to-stitch (RTS) options  for consumers.            

Day to days the RTW segment increased in popularity and ever since the segment has grown rapidly and outpaced  the RTS segment of the apparel market.  The present tailoring industry in India can be segregated into three distinct segments. Firstly, there is a traditional market of local tailoring for the general masses. The tailor in this market  is a skilled person or groups  of  persons catering the local orders. They  manage to satisfy the needs of the local consumers of small towns and rural areas who wear basic products currently around 80 per cent of the market comprises mass tailors.

The Indian tailoring industry is thriving and growing despite the growth of ready- to- wear (RTW) and branded segments of the apparel market. There is still significant population that prefers RTS fabric due to certain inherent benefits for specific segments like salwaarkameez or suits and trousers etc. Till the time that RTW segments becomes strong in terms of standard sizes across.   However, the tailoring segment  will continue to be in demand and will continue to grow.
