Chidambaram Lake Restoration
The ancient town of Chidambaram is blessed with a large number of lakes and ponds. Over the years, however, these have been subjected to siltation, pollution and encroachment. In a unique effort to revive and reclaim these traditional water conservation structures, Cuddalore District Administration has now partnered with the Environmentalist Foundation of India, a voluntary organisation that specialises in a scientific revival of water bodies. In the first phase, the following ponds shall be taken up for restoration - Ayee Kulam, Gnanaprakasam Kulam, Omakulam, Nagachery Kulam. The work involves: 1) Removal of encroachments 2) Removal of garbage 3) Desiltation 4) Creating water harvesting structures 5) Creation and strengthening of bunds 6) Plantation of saplings along the bund 7) Fencing The work is planned to be done with full involvement of the community to instill a sense of ownership and ensure sustainability. On #GivingTuesdayIndia lets take a step towards restoring our lake. It will be great if all of you could share our fundraiser with your family and friends on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. This will help us receive funds faster and continue our initiative.
